Forensic Chemist I/II - Multiple Openings
About the position
NMS Labs is seeking a Forensic Chemist I/II for our Grand Prairie, TX location. This position is integral to our forensic laboratory testing department, where the successful candidate will engage in chemical and analytical testing, focusing on the isolation and identification of chemical substances in forensic casework samples. The Forensic Chemist will be responsible for a variety of tasks including specimen processing, conducting tests, reporting results, and ensuring quality assurance and documentation of analytical processes. The role requires handling and sampling of forensic casework samples while maintaining the appropriate chain of custody of evidence. The Forensic Chemist will independently perform analyses of chemical substances using various methods, including chemical, microscopic, TLC, and instrumental techniques such as GCMS. Responsibilities also include generating, interpreting, reviewing, and releasing results, as well as performing routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation. The position demands effective communication of scientific findings to both internal and external clients, and the ability to provide expert testimony when required. A high level of integrity, organizational skills, and the ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and compliance standards are essential for success in this role. Candidates must possess a working knowledge of analytical procedures, including a basic understanding of analytical terminology, methods, and theory, and should be able to apply these concepts to forensic cases. The position is full-time, with a schedule from Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, and offers a competitive salary range of $49.1K to $62.1K annually.
Responsibilities
- Perform chemical and analytical testing including the isolation and identification of chemical substances in forensic casework samples. ,
- Handle and sample forensic casework samples while maintaining the appropriate chain of custody of evidence. ,
- Independently perform analysis of chemical substances utilizing chemical, microscopic, TLC, and instrumental methods including GCMS. ,
- Generate, interpret, review, and release test results. ,
- Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation. ,
- Provide expert testimony as required. ,
- Maintain appropriate quality assurance and quality control procedures. ,
- Effectively communicate scientific findings to internal and external clients.
Requirements
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or forensic science from an accredited university is required. ,
- 6 months of lab-related experience is strongly preferred. ,
- Minimum of 16 semester credit hours in college-level chemistry coursework above General Chemistry is required. ,
- Coursework and labs in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Analytical (Instrumental) Chemistry are mandatory. ,
- 3 college-level semester credit hours in Statistics or willingness to take and pass a statistics course within one year of employment is required. ,
- Licensed by the Texas Forensic Science Commission within 1 year of hire, as applicable.
